What is Baseball?
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players. The game takes place on a diamond-shaped field, where the objective is to score runs by hitting a pitched ball and running around a series of four bases. Each team takes turns batting and fielding; the batting team tries to score runs, while the fielding team tries to get batters out. A game typically lasts nine innings, and the team with the most runs wins. Known as “America’s pastime,” baseball is celebrated for its skill, strategy, and rich history.
History of Baseball
Baseball evolved from English bat-and-ball games and took shape in the U.S. in the 19th century. The first official game was in 1846, and Alexander Cartwright helped standardize key rules. The National League was founded in 1876, followed by the American League in 1901, forming Major League Baseball (MLB) and solidifying baseball as “America’s pastime.”
